Welcome to the New Horizon Medical Team, Dr. Shikora!

It is with great excitement that we announce a new option for patients with a BMI over 35 who have been struggling with getting to their healthy goal weight.  This can be extremely frustrating for anyone, especially when trying so hard, sticking to a plan, and not seeing the scale move.

New Horizon has teamed with Dr. Scott Shikora from Brigham and Women’s Hospital to find a solution for patients experiencing this challenge. We have found that some patients have experienced great concern about their progress after being on a specified diet and exercise plan without ever being able to achieve their goal weight. At the same time, other patients that have had bariatric surgery felt that their post-surgical care plan was not adequate enough or frequent enough to yield the desired long term outcomes of keeping the weight off.

Knowing that both methods of weight loss are viable solutions, a combination of the two has been determined to be the model of the future for long term success.

Dr. Shikora is offering private bariatric information / educational appointments at New Horizon Medical for any patients with a BMI over 35.  This appointment is purely to educate our patients on the benefits of surgery and how the process works. It is not expected that just because a patient has this appointment with him that the patient is going to have surgery.  In fact, our patients will be more completely informed of all the health care options available to them to treat obesity.

Some patients will decide that surgery is an appropriate option for them.  In this case, the surgical procedure would be provided at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and New Horizon Medical would provide all of the required pre-op and post-op care in Foxboro.  These patients will continue to be cared for at New Horizon Medical for a period of 5 years to assure long term success.

Dr. Scott Shikora is one of the top bariatric surgeons in the country and we are very excited to start this collaboration with him.  Both he and New Horizon Medical know that combining surgery with long term multi-disciplined care will advance patient success rates in dealing with obesity to new levels.
